5th grade students studied the work of Jim Dine and created hearts that helped to decorate for Jump Rope for Heart.
During mini courses at the middle school the students came over to create sharpie tie dye t-shirts with the kids at Forrest Street! We had so much fun!

Last Spring I applied for an Oneida Nation Arts Program SEEDS Grant and I was luck to recieve the grant and have an Artist in Residence for this whole week! Planting Seeds of Knowledge (SEEDS) is a grant program for schools and other community groups to work with qualified Native Artists in interactive and engaging residencies, workshops and performances. Our Artists are trained to work in educational settings with teachers and students, integrating curriculum, creativity, and culture. More information and a grant application can be found here! http://www.oneidanationarts.org/seeds-grant-info-main.html
The artist I chose to work with is Jennifer Stevens, she is so wonderful! We are working on making pinch pots with all of my students this week. Jennifer is from Green Bay and if you are a Wisconsin Art Teacher I highly recommend Jennifer to visit your classroom as an Artist in Residence. Jennifer is staying in Black River Falls this entire week so I will post about her each day! My husband Mike and I celebrated Halloween this year as the painting American Gothic. We even won 3rd place! The real American Gothic is by artist Grant Wood and he was from Iowa! It is an art museum in Chicago.
http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/6565 Weaving is one of my favorite lessons to teach. 3rd Grade really was excited to watch their weaving grow! Shh! don't tell them we were doing a little math in art.

Bruce Gray is a contemporary artist living in California. You can read more about his art and life on this website http://www.kidzworld.com/article/1698-sculptor-bruce-gray. We even wrote Bruce an email detailing our lesson and thanking him for his inspiration. Update Bruce Gray wrote back!
Mr. Gray! I am writing from chilly Wisconsin to tell you that you have just inspired a lesson for my 5th graders. We looked at your painted wall sculptures for inspiration in a lesson on using geometric and free-form shapes. 5th graders study the art of the United States and they loved that you are still alive-kids crack me up- but in art we sometimes just talk about art history and old dead guys. Thank you for your inspiration. A little about our art class. We are in Black River Falls, Wisconsin a small community in the central part of the state. I teach k-5 art at three different schools around 700 students a week. You can look us up on my blogjendahl.weebly.com. Attached are some of our creations! Hi Jennifer! Thank you for your email and photos of the artworks. I love them! It makes my day when teachers send me these. I am going to add them to my website, on my students work page, when I get a chance. I am also happy to still be alive! I have lots more art to create! Here is a link to the page. http://www.brucegray.com/htmlfolder/html_subpages/ArtStudentsWork.html Cheers! Bruce Gray Third grades are working on weaving and a little math.
So it has been about 14 years since I have had time carved into my schedule to have adaptive art. Don't tell my other 700 kiddos but this is my FAVORITE class to teach. Today we worked on fall trees ripping paper for the bark on the tree and painting with a paintbrush made out of a cardboard tube and a lei. One student was so excited and he wants to add a tree house next week. I love that this art is just for them and we can work on our fine and gross motor skill.
